Italian food from Oklahoma?
While Italian imigration to the United States is often associated with Boston, New York, and other areas around the East Coast, Oklahoma was just like everywhere else at the turn of the century; people went where the work was. In the early 1900's, coal was big business in South East Oklahoma and many Italian families moved to the area in search of work. In 1907, my grandparents moved to Krebs, Oklahoma to take advantage of the burgeoning labor market there. My family has been here ever since.
In 1946 my father, Mike Lovera, opened Mike's Grocery and Meat market on the corner of 6th street in Krebs. His featured product was the sausage and our family sausage recipie was an instant hit. Travelers from all over came to our shop for Lovera's Sausage. Since that time, our family-owned and operated store continues to produce a variety of homemade Italian and local foods.
In 1994, we bagan making our own caciocavallo cheese. While the local producers filled our needs for many years, more and more people wanted this delicious and creamy cheese, and soon enough we started producing it ourselves. Crafted from local milk and hand formed the old-fashioned way, our caciocavallo cheese is an authentic Italian treat.
In 1998 we started to offer our products through this web site which allowed us to serve customers all over the world. We continue to expand our product line so that we can spread our love of Italian Food far and wide. Many items have been hand selected and imported directly from their sources in Italy.
So, come on in and enjoy the taste of our family recipes, purchase a gift basket for someone special, or see what’s new on our shelves. Send us your thoughts, questions and/or suggestions, we're always anxious to hear what our customers have to say.
Our store is easy to find and just a quick turn off Highway 69 as it passes through McAlester and crosses 270. We're open Monday - Saturday, 7:30 am - 6:00 pm. You can find us listed on Google Maps so sent your destination for Krebs, Oklahoma and come down to see us some time.
And as always, thanks for shopping with Lovera’s.
With love for all things Italian, Sam Lovera
